Holbrook Basin Karst Field trip

Jim Neal (hjneal@q.com) is putting together a field trip to the Holbrook Basin April 9-11 2010 for the Geology Club. Here is his itinerary for the trip:

Itinerary: Holbrook Evaporite Karst Field Trip, April 9-11, 2010

Day 1, Friday, April 9th: (OPTIONAL, but Petrified Forest is also underlain by Permian evaporites and has dissolution/collapse features of interest, plus the silicified wood – our State fossil!

Rendezvous in Holbrook @ 0915 at McDonald’s (Exit 286). Driving time from Prescott is ~3 hours (195 miles via Ash Fork and I-40). Those not wanting to leave Prescott @ 0600 can find numerous motels and restaurants in Holbrook for overnight on Thursday.
Depart Holbrook @ 0930, heading to south entrance of Petrified Forest via Highway 180 and arriving PFNP ~1000. Numerous stops and side hikes during the day, arriving north Park Visitor Center ~1600 (see separate summary for PFNP). Park closes @ 1800; remainder of day can be spent at Visitor Center or Gift Shop. Return to Holbrook via I- 40, then to Snowflake.
Overnight accommodations can be secured at Fools Hollow State Recreation Area (camping) on the North side of Show Low, or at Comfort Inn, 2055 S. Main St., Snowflake (928-536-3888). Other Snowflake motels and B&Bs are also available – at lesser and greater cost. Alternatively, Holbrook accommodations can be secured for both nights.

Day 2, Saturday, April 10th: (PRIMARY TRIP) (See separate summary AND trip road log)

Rendezvous @ 0930 at intersection of Highways 277 and 77 in Snowflake. Driving time from Prescott via Ash Fork and I-40 is 3½ hours (225 miles), enabling a 0600 Prescott departure. High clearance vehicles are strongly recommended, but 4WD is usually unnecessary unless muddy conditions exist. Back road, isolated travel is required, so bring your lunch, water, hiking boots, sunscreen, cameras, rain jackets, first aid, and other accoutrements for the whole day. Day 2 Geostops will terminate ~1700 at a remote location about 7 miles off the highway and some 25 miles from Holbrook.
Overnight camping available at remote location with NO facilities and NO water. Numerous motels and restaurants are available in Holbrook for overnight.

Day 3, Sunday, April 11th: Depart McDonald’s @ 0915, heading to Winslow via I-40. Head to Chevelon Canyon and McCauley Sinks, arriving ~1015. Back road, isolated travel is required, so bring your lunch, water, hiking boots, sunscreen, cameras, rain jackets, first aid, and other accoutrements for the whole day. Day 3 Geostops will terminate ~1400, allowing for return to Prescott ~1730, or optional stops at Meteor Crater, Grand Falls, or Walnut Canyon.
See additional summaries for OPTIONAL stops (on your own) at Meteor Crater, Walnut Canyon, and Grand Falls – following the regular field trip…

We will be sending more details to those who sign up with Jim.
